EIG Focus
EIG (Environmental Informatics Group at Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes) has one of the longest histories in the development of Environmental Information Systems in Germany and over the world. The first Environmental Informatics Institute world-wide was founded here in 1987 and was continued by the EIG institute in 1995, at that time oriented towards a broader international focus.

EIG is conducting projects on all levels of environmental organisations, from local to international, including projects funded by various governments. The institute has been involved in over 70 projects in the field of Environmental Informatics over the last 15 years, including projects for international bodies like the EU and the United Nations. It has also organised many conferences and workshops on Environmental Informatics, including IFIP's (International Federation for Information Processing) prestigious conference series ISESS (International Symposium on Environmental Software Systems). Both EIG directors have been actively involved with scientific bodies like IFIP and the German Informatics Society in responsible positions dealing with Environmental Informatics. They have been co-authoring several standard text books on the topic. EIG is specialised in the development of distributed data networks and distributed meta-information networks, software architectures for distributed applications integration (including cross-border and multi-lingual applications), meta information concepts and models, information modelling for innovative environmental information systems and information management systems in general. In the field of generic integration architectures for environmental information systems, EIG is a leading institute world-wide.
