Title:SANY (Sensors Anywhere)

Description:Sensors Anywhere (SANY) is an FP6 IST-5 Integrated Project dealing with sensor networks research for environmental applications. It aims to contribute to joint European Commission (EC) and the European Space Agency (ESA) "Global Monitoring for Environment and Security" (GMES) initiative by improving the interoperability of in-situ sensors and sensor networks, and allowing quick and cost-efficient reuse of data and services from currently incompatible sources in future environmental risk management applications.
This ambitious goal shall be achieved by (1) specifying a (generic) standard open architecture for fixed and moving sensors and sensor networks capable of seamless "plug and measure" and sharing (virtual networks); (2) developing and validating re-usable data fusion and decision support service building blocks and a reference implementation of the architecture; (3) closely working with end users and international organisation in order to assure that the outcome of SANY contributes to future standard(s) applicable to GMES.
All SANY architecture specifications shall be publicly available, validated by experts through OGC technical committee and compatible with EU and ESA infrastructure initiatives, such as Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE; standard interfaces with geospatial information).
Last, but not the least important, SANY specifications shall be realised in three innovative risk management applications covering the areas of air pollution, marine risks and geo hazards.

Title:ORCHESTRA (Open Architecture and Spatial Data Infrastructure for Risk Management)

Description:Risk Managment components involve a vast range of sectoral institutions and organisations at variousadministrative levels with different systems and services. Exchange of relevant information needed indealing with the risks is often limited to a raw data exchange level and true efficiency, in most cases, is hindered by administrative and legal boundaries as well as a lack of interoperability on the technical side. The application of numerous and different policies, procedures, data standards and systems, result in problems relating to co-ordination data analysis, information delivery and resource management, all critical elements of Risk Management. Standardization can improve the current situation. ORCHESTRA will provide services for Multi-Risk Management by designing an open architecture, specifiying and implementing a generic service platform and providing relevant tools based on non-proprietary standards. Two types of users will benefit from the ORCHESTRA solutions: 1. System users like IT architects, system developers and integrators that conceive and develop Risk Management applications. 2. End-users such as members of public agencies or private companies that use the thematic applications which have been built according to and using the ORCHESTRA services. The overall approach for the scientific and technical development is to base the ORCHESTRA project onto existing building blocks and to extend/adapt, or develop whenever necessary, these building blocks to the specific Risk Management context. To adress all the issues and requirement, we ceonceptuallydecompose the project into the following 5 sub-projects:
-User requirements and Policy watchdog
–Open Platform for Risk Management
–Implementation of Services
–Community building and training
–Coordination, Dissemination and exploitation.
That covers all the spectra of the activities we intend to tackle in the ORCHESTRA integrated project.
