Environmental Informatics Group (EIG) is a research institute working in the field of information and decision support systems for environmental management, risk management and security. EIG was founded by Prof. Dr. Reiner Güttler and Prof. Dr. Ralf Denzer in 1996. Since 2002, Prof. Dr. Steven P. Frysinger of James Madison University is an associate of EIG. Together, we have been involved in well over 100 projects in the field since the mid 80’s. We conduct research projects, application projects and aim at fostering technology transfer. We specialise in distributed information infrastructures, interactive applications and integrated decision support systems, which often include numerical models. EIG has worked in projects around the globe and collaborates with partners in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Our collaborators include national and international research institutions, government bodies and industry. We strongly support international scientific exchange by collaborating in scientific bodies, by initiating and organising conferences, workshops, scientific working groups and student exchange. Among others we have been involved in the organisation of the International Symposium on Environmental Software Systems (ISESS) since 1995. As of July 2018, EIG has closed its operations.
Our legacy includes founding the ISESS conference in 1995, which remains a relevant podium for environmental software.
After 22 succesful years of research Environmental Informatics Group has closed its operations with the retirement of Reiner Güttler and Ralf Denzer from university.
